When was the PS3 be released & how much is it?

On November 11, 2006, the Playstation 3 (otherwise known as the PS3) was launched in Japan. The retail price is about 50,000 (yen) for the basic model (20 gig harddrive) versus about 72,000 (yen), as set by Japanese retailers for the Premium model (60 gig harddrive).

On November 17, 2006, PS3 launched in the US and Canada with an estimated price tag of $549.00 (cdn) and $499.00 (us) for the basic model while the premium PS3 sells for $659.00 (cdn) and $599.00 (us) respectively.

Can PS3 play PS2 & PS1 games?
No big surprise hear, as Playstation 2 had the ability to play first generation Playstation games, Sony has announced full backwards compatibility. No word yet on whether the PS2 games playability or graphics will be better when played on the PS3.

So, what's under the hood?
Playstation 3 sports a pretty impressive spec sheet including a revolutionary Cell Processor, Power PC-base Core @ 3.2GHz, 512kb L2 Cache and a processing capacity of 2.18 TFLOPS. If you don't understand any of that, just know this:

The PS3 is expected to be twice as powerful as the new Xbox 360, about 10 times as powerful as the Nintendo Revolution (and for all you old schoolers, only 40 times more powerful than PS2)

How much Memory does PS3 have?
Samsung - the company in charge of arming PS3 with memory is expected to include a total of 512MB of RAM. 256MB for the system memory and 256MB for the GPU.

Will PS3 have a Hard Drive included?
They thought so, then they obviously saw the price tag. If the Playstation 3 comes shipped with a Hard Drive, we'd be surprised. We'd also eats our shorts. Don't expect this hard drive to be a standard feature as cost cutting and reality start to rear their ugly heads. No worries though, PS3 will come with a 2.5" bay where you can pop-in an aftermarket hard drive (which may also come with Linux already installed!)

Can PS3 games be played online?
Roger that. Sony confirmed (at E3) that online gaming fun shall be had by all. This also seems to be a bit of a no-brainer since Xbox 360 will offer online services.
